EVERY CHILD, EVERY OPPORTUNITY, EVERY DAY

Families & Carers

Working together to build strong relationships, celebrate progress and support every student's learning, wellbeing and future.

Strong Partnerships with Families

At Yarraville Special Developmental School, families and carers are valued partners in every student's education. We believe that trusting relationships, open communication and shared understanding help children and young people feel safe, supported and connected to their school community.

We recognise that families know their children best. By listening to their perspectives and working together, we can support consistent approaches to communication, learning, wellbeing and independence across school and home.

We welcome families' involvement and aim to create opportunities for everyone to feel informed, included and confident in their partnership with the school.

Ways to Connect and Get Involved

Partnerships grow through everyday conversations, shared planning and opportunities to participate in school life. Depending on the activity and individual circumstances, families and carers may connect with the school through:

Student Support Group (SSG) Meetings

Working with school staff to discuss learning goals, progress, adjustments and the supports that help each student participate and succeed.

Home–School Communication

Sharing updates, achievements and important information through school communication channels, including Seesaw where used.

Family Voice and Feedback

Contributing ideas and experiences through conversations, surveys and other opportunities to help inform school improvement.

Classroom and School Activities

Taking part in appropriate classroom visits, parent morning groups and opportunities to support learning activities or prepare resources.

Workshops and Information Sessions

Joining family workshops and sessions that share practical strategies, resources and information relevant to students' learning and development.

Assemblies and Celebrations

Connecting with the school community and celebrating student learning, milestones, achievements and special events.

Every family contributes in its own way. We understand that time, work and caring commitments vary. Participation can take many forms, and meaningful communication matters just as much as attending an event in person.

Planning for Life Beyond School

For students approaching their final years at Yarraville SDS, we work closely with families and carers to explore post-school opportunities and prepare for a positive transition. Planning is guided by each young person's interests, strengths, aspirations and individual support needs.

Our aim is to help students and families understand available options, ask questions, connect with relevant providers and make informed decisions about the next stage of life.

1

Explore Opportunities

Discuss individual goals and learn about possible services, programs and community participation opportunities after school.

2

Gather Information

Access information about service providers and, where available, attend provider presentations or organised visits and tours.

3

Prepare for Transition

Consider suitable trial experiences where offered, discuss practical arrangements and develop a transition plan with the student and family.

Individualised planning: Opportunities such as service-provider presentations, bus tours and trial days depend on provider availability and suitability. School staff can discuss current options with families during transition planning.

Together, Every Step of the Way

From the first day of school to the transition into life beyond school, our partnership with families and carers helps create a welcoming, connected and supportive learning community. We value your voice and look forward to working together to celebrate every achievement.
