Building strong foundations for communication, belonging, independence and meaningful learning, one achievement at a time.
Our Junior Learning Area welcomes students aged 5 to 12 years into a safe, welcoming and supportive environment. We recognise that every child brings their own strengths, interests, ways of communicating and learning needs. Our focus is on helping each student feel included, confident and ready to participate in school life.
Learning is personalised and purposeful. Students are supported to communicate their needs and ideas, build positive relationships, develop independence and explore early literacy and numeracy in ways that are meaningful to them. Teaching approaches and activities are adapted to each student's individual goals and level of support.
Through play, hands-on exploration, familiar routines and everyday experiences, students have opportunities to make choices, practise emerging skills and discover what they can achieve. We value progress in all its forms and celebrate each child's growth at their own pace.
Our Junior Learning learning experiences bring together communication, wellbeing, relationships and practical skills. Each priority is approached flexibly so students can participate in ways that reflect their abilities, interests and individual learning goals.
Supporting students to express needs, preferences, feelings and ideas using the communication methods that work for them, including speech, gestures, visuals, assistive technology and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).
Developing practical skills through familiar classroom and daily routines, such as organising belongings, participating in personal care, making choices and completing tasks with appropriate support.
Helping students recognise and communicate their feelings, build a sense of safety and access personalised strategies and supportive environments that promote comfort, engagement and readiness to learn.
Encouraging positive connections with classmates and staff through shared activities, play, turn-taking and opportunities to participate as valued members of the school community.
Building understanding through stories, books, symbols, sounds, numbers, patterns and everyday problem-solving, using accessible activities linked to students' experiences and interests.
Creating opportunities for curiosity, creativity, sensory discovery and movement through engaging play and hands-on activities that encourage students to explore, experiment and learn.
We value strong partnerships with families and a shared understanding of each student's strengths and goals. Our teachers, education support staff and allied health professionals work together to encourage participation, recognise meaningful progress and celebrate every achievement, big or small.
