Supporting movement, physical participation and growing confidence through personalised, strengths-based support.
At Yarraville Special Developmental School, physiotherapy supports students to develop and use movement skills that are meaningful to their learning, comfort and participation in everyday school life.
Our physiotherapist assesses each student's individual strengths and physical support needs. This may include looking at mobility, posture, sitting balance, coordination, muscle strength, joint movement, flexibility, standing stability and walking.
Based on each student's needs and goals, the physiotherapist develops tailored exercise and movement programs. Activities are adapted to support participation at a pace and level that is appropriate for the individual student.
Physiotherapy goals are individualised. Depending on a student's needs, support may focus on one or more of the following areas.
Supporting students to develop and practise movement skills that help them navigate learning spaces and take part in daily activities.
Exploring ways to support stable, comfortable positioning and active participation during classroom and school routines.
Developing muscle strength, standing stability and physical confidence through activities matched to each student's abilities.
Providing opportunities to practise coordinated movements and develop greater control during purposeful physical activities.
Supporting muscle flexibility and joint range of movement as part of an individualised approach to physical wellbeing.
Connecting movement goals with meaningful school experiences, everyday routines and opportunities for students to do more in ways that work for them.
There is no single pathway to progress. Physiotherapy support recognises each student's starting point and focuses on achievable goals that can make a positive difference to comfort, movement and participation throughout the school day.
We value the progress each student makes, whether it is developing a new movement skill, becoming more confident in an activity or participating more comfortably in everyday school experiences.
