EVERY CHILD, EVERY OPPORTUNITY, EVERY DAY

STEAM Program

Inspiring curiosity, creativity and problem-solving through meaningful, hands-on learning.

Exploring STEAM at Yarraville SDS

At Yarraville Special Developmental School, STEAM brings together Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics through engaging, practical learning experiences. Students are encouraged to explore their surroundings, ask questions, experiment with materials and discover what happens when they try something new.

Learning experiences can include sensory investigations, construction activities, creative design, digital resources and everyday problem-solving. Activities are adapted to students' strengths, interests, communication preferences and individual learning goals so everyone has opportunities to participate and contribute.

STEAM is about more than finding one correct answer. It offers students opportunities to make choices, communicate ideas, work alongside others, practise new skills and celebrate their discoveries in ways that are meaningful to them.

Learning Through Inquiry and Discovery

By exploring, designing, testing and trying again, students can build confidence and develop their own approaches to challenges. Supported investigations encourage curiosity, creativity and persistence while providing opportunities for communication, collaboration and shared achievement.

Our STEAM Learning Priorities

Each STEAM experience provides opportunities to explore practical concepts and develop skills in ways that are accessible, engaging and relevant to individual learners.

Science & Exploration

Exploring the world through observation, sensory experiences and supported experiments that encourage curiosity and discovery.

Technology & Digital Learning

Using accessible digital tools and interactive resources to explore ideas, make choices and build confidence with technology.

Engineering & Construction

Designing, building and testing simple structures using hands-on materials, with opportunities to try different solutions.

Arts & Creative Thinking

Using colour, shape, design and imaginative activities to communicate ideas and explore different ways of creating.

Mathematics in Action

Discovering patterns, shapes, measurement, sorting and counting through practical activities and meaningful challenges.

Problem-Solving & Collaboration

Practising persistence, sharing ideas, making decisions and working alongside others through supported investigations and projects.

Every Discovery Matters

Whether a student is exploring a new texture, building a structure, using a digital tool or sharing an idea, we value their curiosity, effort and progress. Every opportunity to explore and create is a chance to learn and grow.
